how and why kirk? Posted by: olly 1 at June 24, 2007 05:10 AMI remember a couple of years back when this comment board would be at hundreds of comments for each post. And now a miserable few. Posted by: wethefeeble at June 24, 2007 03:17 PMWTF ? wth? FU? Posted by: HAmbone at June 24, 2007 04:14 PMis the linear cable under warranty? Yeah, just ship your old cable to them and they'll semf you a new one as long as you pay the 15$ shipping and handling. Or you could just buy a new one. idiot. Posted by: ben at June 24, 2007 08:07 PMThe Wombolts were advertised as almost perfect in every way. Lighter, stronger, easier. So the amount of broken Wombolts posted on various websites has no excuse. Writing it off as "bad installation" doesn't work in the first place because Ody claimed they were going to be easy and problem free when installing. Now we've heard that excuse too many times to believe it. Oh, and the pedal bosses have been breaking too. Can't blame that on bad installation. And Ody refuses to admit that part might be weak, despite all the calls for the "wrap around" design to be considered. Sure G says the wrap around design isn't needed, and compares it to the headtube/toptube/downtube junction...But that comparison just doesn't work. First of all those junctions often have gussets. Second of all, crank and frame tubes are not proportionally the same so trying to make them out to be similar is sketchy thinking at best. They don't even handle the same amounts of stress. Anyone and everyone who rides BMX and has an internet connection has at least heard the bad news about the Wombolts, and spread it along. Have Ody sales gone down significantly? Doubtful, but are they as good as they could be? Nope. And as far as the Wombolts are concerned sales will never be as good as they could be, because we've all been scared shitless of them now. And as far as Odys reputation for legendary quality? Well, let me just say this: I doubt what Ody tells us nowadays. I used to have cause to trust their every word. Not so much any more. Ody rushed the Wombolts in order to keep up with their competitors...And guess what happened? Instead of holding true to their reputation for legendary quality, they've shot themselves in the foot. Fly cranks are breaking. If Ody had waited and let G spend more time to make the Wombolts properly, Ody could have easily dominated the crank market. Patience is a virtue guys. George, you sold your soul to team up with Ody in order to get your stuff out there more, and you also wanted to help out a great company. But the quality of your own G-Sport parts has gone down significantly since, and Odyssey has become more about the marketing than it has about making great quality parts. Consider finding your receipt for your soul, it might be worth getting back. PS Hollowbites with a ti spindle are almost as light as Wombolts, some claim they are at least as light. Ody could have put Primo in their place, but no. They had to rush things. Tsk. Instead of holding true to their reputation for legendary quality, they've shot themselves in the foot." But it seems like they are trying to fix that this time with the plegs and what not.... I think!!! Lets all hope for the best, would be cool to get more updates etc. Oh and re do stuff like the team page which has stayed the same for the past 3 years almost.
everyone complains that parts are taking so long to become available but at least odyssey keeps us updated on new things that are coming out, it is good marketing. as with the quality of products, half the kids nowdays look at the weight above all, and if thats wat the kids want thats what will get made, and its pretty simple that light parts in most cases equal less strength. and lights parts designed for light use trails etc. are being used for hucking down stairs and hard street riding. stop complaining, if you dont like something dont get it. i beleive odyssey is a more genuine company that many out there so give them a break. Posted by: steve at June 25, 2007 02:25 AMyeh steve i think your right. odyssey dont not want to be shot in the arse this time. so there retesting the plegs and blamming manufauring material or something. bull++++ Posted by: riz at June 25, 2007 08:43 AMHey Guyroy, What do you want me to say? I can understand you being super pissed if we were refusing warranty, or leaving the design of the crank un-modified, or not answering people's compaints. But that simply isnt the case. First let's put things in perspective, sure, we have had some teething problems with the Wombolts. And far more broken sets than I would like or expected, HOWEVER, AS A PERCENTAGE OF SALES THIS IS STILL A SMALL NUMBER. A lot of the problem is that the same broken cranks get posted multiple times on the internet and blows things out of proportion. Obviously, I am super sorry, but the problems came as a surprise as much to me as to you and I am probably more dissappointed than anyone else. We put a HUGE amount of time into testing these cranks. If you look back you will see that far from being "rushed out" we repeatedly delayed release to check things. However none of us, thought to test them with the wrong number of spacers. We are now doing EVERYTHING WE CAN to put this situation right. We DO warranty any and ALL broken cranks, and we warranty them with a "beefed up" version. I also do all I can to keep riders informed about the changes and try to help out. I really dont see that there is much more we can do. But if there is, then let me know. I am ALWAYS available on email. In terms of the "design" of the crank, I still fully stand by my choice to NOT wrap the pedal lugs. There are sound engineering reasons for this. It reduces the heat put into the lug, it provides a better stress path, and it allows more material to be used elsewhere. The very small number of cranks that have broken at the pedal lug, have done so due to poor weld penetration, nothing more, and being a wrapped design would NOT fix this. It simply needed to be welded right, which it normally is, and we have instituted new measures to check this at ALL the welds. As I say, we have been working very hard to "fix" these cranks and as far as I am aware we have not had a single one of the newer beefier cranks (that are likely to be the ones in shops and sent out for warranty) come back. Personally I am still running my "first generation" Wombolts with no problems and continue to do so. I/We dont design and re-design cranks every year, this is a long term product, and I still have absolute faith in the design as a long term winner. Well George, what do you want me to say? You're prompt and forward responses make you one of the most appreciated people in the industry. Well, to those of us who like good service anyway. :) But the post above has been building up for weeks now as I've personally been trying to convince people of the great quality and design of the Wombolts. I love Odyssey and G-Sport and I've never been afraid to say so. When Odyssey said stronger, lighter, easier, I believed whole-heartedly. If you can't understand me being super-pissed despite all the help and warranty you guys are offering, then you don't understand just how much faith people have been putting in to your products. Does it make sense to put so much faith in to something new? Hell no. But Odyssey has a following; an amazing following. Generally, those of us who want the best, even if only for the sake of having the best, look to Odyssey first. I'm sure you're more disappointed than anyone else in the world. But some of your customers can't handle this kind of disappointment without feeling a little bit betrayed as well. Posted by: Guyroy at June 25, 2007 11:26 AMYeah man, Guyroy and Gsport-George should start a company and call it RoyGeorge! and then sing cama chameleon!! Posted by: wethefeeble at June 25, 2007 12:58 PMcranks break guys, i broke 2 pairs of profile cranks within 6 months. i just picked up some hollowbites and went on. theyve lasted since then. all of my friends have wombolts (too bad nobody has plegs) and 1 of them is a mega-hucker and he threes(360's) deadman gaps to flat most of the time kinda like cameron wood, no problemos with his wombolts, but im not trying to say wombolts are problem-free. my point is that weight weenies get what they deserve but something made by odyssey should be trust-worthy.
