The Elementary Stem is Patented.

The Elementary Stem patent was published by the United States Patent Office on October 18, 2005. The assignment number is 6,955,371. Getting approval is a loooooong process. It's usually close to two years. This is George French's first U.S. patent, and there are certainly more to follow.

A lot of people worked on this product to make it a reality. In addition to all of the development hours put in by both George and myself, there was also the time invested by Jim Bauer and our team riders; Adam Banton, Jimmy LeVan, Gary Young and Jim Cielencki.

This is a great time to say, "thanks" to everyone. It's hard to believe that Jim B. and George were using the prototypes back in the spring of 2003...Our latest poster in Ride (US) has incredible photos that show the stem being put to use by Jimmy LeVan and Jim Cielencki.

In closing, as you might expect, there's obviously even more in store for the Elementary Stem in 2006. We'll post the information here as it becomes available.

Thanks for reading.

so when are the new one going to be available?

Badass...now I get to buy a stem that doesn't say "pat pend."

Its always interesting to see insider stuff, like the elementary mold...

Hey Odyssey I got a question for you. You know back in the day i belive Mongoose made the same design as the Elementry, but never really got around to making it a production model. Do you know if you guys got any pics of that? Since thats were Geroge probally got the idea for it.

check my email if you have any.

^ I sincerely doubt that. Especially if by "back in the day" you mean during the quilled stem / threaded headset era. It just wouldn't make sense.

Send me the photos and information on this if you have it. There's been a lot of unusual stem designs over the years.

PS: There's no news as of this writing on any "new" production changes to the Elementary Stems. We'll post here as things develop. NOTE: The Elementary SL was an Interbike only special.

I should also point out that it's against the law to apply for a patent if you have prior knowledge of the design already originating from another source or inventor.

It should go without saying that we wouldn't invest the time and money into this if it wasn't believed to be 100% original by George, myself and our patent attorney. It would be a waste.

I've been reading bicycle magazines religiously since the early 1980's, and I've never seen anything like the Elementary Stem in that time. Not to mention that the rest of the BMX/bicycle community that's been doing this since day one would've already called it out long before this if your accusation was valid. There's a lot of old riders in this industry, and the stem has been published in every sort of bicycle/design media outlet that one can possibly imagine in the last two years...and there isn't a single person that has even attempted to dispute it in that time.

Posted by: homer at October 20, 2005 04:32 PM

^ Clean and regrease the wedge surfaces and the threads on the locking bolt. You can use the instructions as a guide, if necessary.

If there are new things to come for the elementary stem in 06 should i buy one now or wait? Also I would like to request a Kevlar covered Senior seat. THANKS!

Posted by: cm08 at October 20, 2005 06:50 PM

There is nothing set in stone for updates on the stem. They're most likely a long way off, and anything that does happen will be minor anyway.

We are planning to do a Kevlar-type cover for the Senior seat.

Posted by: Chris Cotsonas at October 20, 2005 06:56 PM

Odyssey, why are you thinking about making a rainbow elementry?

Posted by: fatgrz at October 21, 2005 05:23 AM

Chris, thanks alot for the reply. I will definitely be waiting to purchase a new seat until that Kevlar-type Senior seat is available, then that thing is on my bike immediately! Keep up the good work, all of my odyssey parts(a large majority of my bike), have been working out top notch.

Posted by: jayson at October 21, 2005 06:05 PM

every bike check someone has odyssey ABrake pads
what are these?
are the avalible?

Posted by: pete at October 23, 2005 05:11 AM

If you guys had some newly designed brake pads coming in the near future, that would be sick. I didn't realize what real braking was until I got rid of the standard pads you throw in with the evolver brakes.

I was wondering if I could trade in my '05 civilian low bars for the butted 7.75 rise ones.

The low ones hurt my back.
