Gsport Ribcage

The Ribcage is the first NEW product from Gsport since merging with Odyssey. Check this drawing out for everything you need to know about the new rim. It is exactly what you would expect from George.

"I always wanted to do a rim. Some of these concepts have been floating around in my head for over ten years. The primary aim of the rim is to be VERY strong, a rim that will take the harshest riding, while remaining close to the weight of some the lightest rims that are currently available. Another aim was to try to put a stop to pinch punctures once and for all. While a puncture caused by glass or nails is down to the tyre; pinch punctures are all about the rim. By carefully detailing the design of the rim section, we hope that a properly installed tyre and tube will be almost impervious to pinch flats (A properly installed tyre should be well inflated, with chalk between the tyre and tube). A lot of thought also went into the spoke positioning. For many years I have called for spokes to cross to the opposite hub flange, so obviously when the chance came up to design a rim I incorporated this feature, but I also wanted the spokes to have a really solid seat to avoid cracking around the nipple. The traditional way to reinforce spoke holes is with eyelets, but eyelets do nothing for the overall strength of the wheel and leach a small amount of precious weight. Instead we developed the "ribs" that this rim is named after. These ribs run all around the inside of the rim section and serve to strengthen the wall of the rim against cracking. In addition to improving the rim's overall strength, the ribs also incorporate angled shoulders to help create a precision seat for the spoke nipple, thus further distributing the load from the spoke. By keeping the spokes and the ribs close to each other at the centre of the rim we have created a "spine" that runs all the way around the inner circumference, and this consolidates the entire structure of the wheel. The rim is now in the final stages of testing and should be available in 36 and 48 hole towards the end of this year (if not sooner). More information will follow at a later date." -- George French

Wow...G-Sport and Odyssey never cease to amaze me...

Everything that you've made has been perfect...and now this??

Looks like I get to wait to get new wheels now...

Anyword on Possibly a casset from G. or should I just go with an Ody...

P.S. Make a headset...with angular contact bearings...there SO hard to find now-a-days...

Posted by: Joe B. at September 21, 2005 12:03 AM

Any chance of the senior seat coming with kevlar corners and nose like the junior, or even better with an entire kevlar cover. kevlar is the best seat cover material and you should make the senior seat with it so i can buy one ASAP. odyssey rules!

Posted by: jason at September 21, 2005 01:51 AM

looks nice, i'll have to decide between this and the fly rim, to put on my marmoset when i get it, its for the front so i might get the fly i think its a bit lighter, whichever comes out when i can afford it probly

Posted by: cankles at September 21, 2005 02:39 AM

Wowzers, Jim your stupid, but hey, what about chrome, or the duralectra process... Either of those in sight for the Rib possibly?

Posted by: alexander at September 21, 2005 02:58 AM

The Elementary Stem will not crush your fork/bars or "slip" if it is installed correctly. Please send us an e-mail if you ever need assistance of any kind.

Posted by: BIKER ON ODYSSEY at September 21, 2005 03:39 PM

is this gsport rim is coming out, will it challenge other rims like the balance and big city rim?

and will this rim also be available in chrome?

Posted by: Tom at September 21, 2005 03:58 PM

well the rim should be good, now i am more than satisfied with my seven kA rims i run them front and back and they are still as straight as the first day. you should make the seven k in duralektra finish

Posted by: panchito at September 21, 2005 08:11 PM

hey G, I would just like to say well done and a good job on this and all of your products, I will lace this up to my monkey front hub when I get a chance..

Posted by: b-rad bunzel at September 22, 2005 01:38 AM

Is it coming in chrome, if yes, then ill buy it, if no, then thanks for getting my hopes up!

Posted by: Scott at September 22, 2005 03:01 AM

Hey cool rim and all that, I once laced up my mates wheel, a profile cassette on a Sun BFR, with the spokes crossed over, like as on this new rim. It went to shit after 3 weeks and literally exploded in a shower of broken spokes.

I know the spoke nipple seats are not directional like on the G-sport rim but they are more or less flat so it shouldnt matter if they angle out to the edge of the rim or in to the middle.

The wheel build was a pretty good one, with nice even tension, DT comp spokes and a good Park truing stand.

How come mine ate it so fast? My mate was a bit of a pedaller and liked to bomb like a bastard, but wasn't exactly a street beater, (he had an ally race frame and chuffed around the track for laughs)

Posted by: ben at September 22, 2005 04:55 PM

PS You guys at Odyssey must be sick to death of people going,

''My mate said my Elementary stem is going to explode if i leave it in direct sunlight!''

or

''I know somebody, that knows somebodys mate, whos cousins girlfriend is going out with somebody, whos dad, works with another guy, whos son, said they heard on BMX plus forum, that the elementary stem will eat all the parts on my bike, and then vanish in a puff of purple smoke...''

Or crap to that effect. I have the stem, I have had it for a while now, and Benson, Ernie etc, (some of the hardest hitters in english street riding,) get on fine with them. And thats not to mention the whole Odyssey team that haven't broken them.

Also, (I'm on work time here, the phones are down :) ), you guys at Odyssey thought about licensing out the 41Thermal process, to make tubesets for frames? A little like what Easton do with alu for third parties. I heard that Odyssey would never make a frame, which is cool. But i'm sure a, eg. Kink Freebird with 41thermal tubeset would sell like hell, if 41thermal is suitable for frames that is...

Just some thoughts whilst I'm abusing the net at work....

Posted by: ben at September 22, 2005 05:09 PM

41 Thermal wouldn't work for frames, it's too stiff and would snap.

Posted by: Joe B. at September 23, 2005 02:43 AM

nice whelles they will go with my adam b pedales

Posted by: gary k at September 23, 2005 05:16 AM

That is completely untrue.
It would work the same as it would on forks, bars, cranks, etc.

Posted by: Jim B at September 23, 2005 05:16 AM

hey guys i have asked this question befor but i dont think it was answered....

now that you have 4 colors for the elementary, the wedges are all the same color as the stem, you can buy replacement wedges for it on your online store, can you buy the colored wedges seperately?

i placed an order with you online shop. thanks for having that available on you site.

Posted by: 3mta3/pokertron at September 23, 2005 06:52 AM

Hmm, they look like they are going to be great rims. But I still love my Hazard Lts.

Posted by: bryan at September 23, 2005 08:48 PM

does anyone know where i could get some 41t cranks? not the whole set with spindle

Posted by: jason at September 24, 2005 02:36 AM

about that last post i meant just the arms not everything have a profile spindle barnd new and want some 41t arms baby

Posted by: jason at September 24, 2005 03:55 AM

so this is the rim jc had for the street gap?!

Posted by: iowain biker at September 24, 2005 04:04 AM

Any chance of a Senior saddle with a kevlar cover? I would buy one and so would everyone else who likes their seat to last. If not, how durable is the current leather cover? Thanks.

Posted by: cm08 at September 24, 2005 05:11 AM

you may want to check some of the older entries on your site. june 05 (intac seatpost) comments towards the end. some pretty shady links at the end...

Posted by: some guy at September 25, 2005 05:15 AM

Anyway I can get a high-res photo e-mailed to me of that last pic?

It would make an awesome backdrop for my computer! Haha, thanks...

Posted by: Joe B. at September 25, 2005 09:12 AM

Will you be doing them in chrome aswell as black?

Posted by: Mark at September 26, 2005 10:03 AM

Have fun an Interbike!

I wish I could go...I really want to see the new cranks...

Posted by: Joe B. at September 27, 2005 12:22 AM

what are the new cranks?

Posted by: mark at September 27, 2005 10:09 AM

yo i just copped the new odsy cassette w/lsd laced top a 7k rim. such a dope back wheel. when is odyssey coming out with 41 therm spokes?!? anyways i also got a set of the new yellow jc pedals with the new style pins.
hella dope! i put them on with out noticing that they came with them and when i rode them it did feel a lil more grippy. i didn't put two and two together until i got home and took a closer look.
i think that no threads at the top will also destroy your soles less, plus i think that since they are a lil more narrow at the top it allows your foot to come in contact with the pedal more.

seriously get the new pins for your jc's.

would odyssey cover any damaged on the inside of azard lites? my lovely hazard lite is cracked 3 times in the inside :-(

Posted by: jay at September 28, 2005 04:22 AM

i also have a red duralektra and the paint came off like in the first 5 weeks i rode it

Posted by: jay at September 28, 2005 04:26 PM

I smashed a hazard lite and I know for a fact that odyssey wont' give up the warranty on rims we trash when we ride! not to bring any hopes down but its' a rim and we land really hard sometimes hence how I trashed my hazard lite rear so I just threw it away sold my front one and bought a pair of midways. After i laced them up I went back to the gap where i trashed my lite and proceeded to gap the same obstacle and blam!, blew out my tire and tube but when i checked out my new midway rear not even a scratch or dent or chip or case on that bad boy excellent rim and not heavy at all!! I tell you man FUCKING ODYSSEY!!!

Posted by: BIKER ON ODYSSEY at September 28, 2005 10:25 PM

Posted by: jarredb at September 30, 2005 03:41 AM

I apologize for those who couldn't make it to interbike it is mad gangsta this year! fo sho! the prototype cranks are so badass , I WISH THEY SOLD THEM NOW! The ribcage rim is pretty cool in person too. Too bad jim wouldn't sell me some of his crunk new bars , no problem I'll just hook them up when they come out.
