You may have noticed on Adam Banton’s last bike check that he has a 3/8″ axle listed for his Ratchet hub and JC has one on his bike too. These aluminum axle kits are available now and come with spacers which helps fit the hub to most 14mm dropouts. If you’re looking to shave some weight or maybe even just clean up the look of your bike with our Volcano Bolts, this kit would be a great upgrade for your Ratchet. Hit up the mail-orders or your local bike shop to get your bike on one.
g sport hubs have always been the best freestyle hubs money can buy, the originals all had 10mm bolts and were never any problems. if there is huge support beneath the peg inside the dropout, the peg cannot bend the axle, g sport have always been designed this way. we never really needed 14mm axles as all the axle does is hold it all together, george french is a legend i’m running marmoset and 10t ratchet 14mm they are awesome and have been hassle free. the female axle works great if you run a slammed chain. genius.
Nick, the G-Coaster won’t be ready for a year or two.

how much weight does it save (going from 14mm to 3/8″ on the Ratchet)? I’m wondering if there is any point in switching if my frame is 14mm.
Jim B ( November 18th, 2009 at 3:22 pm ):
You save exactly 3oz., or 85.05 Grams, converting to the 3/8 axle.
Christian ( November 18th, 2009 at 5:30 pm ):
Will you be able to run it with an odyssey P.A.C.T chain tensonor

do I get this well. Axle is still 20mm diameter, the same bearings, but it’s drilled and threaded for 3/8″ bolts instead of 14mm big ones. The axle is actually heavier but it’s alluminium. Thn the bolts are a lot smaller 3/8″ instead of 14mm and thus the weight saving? or am I wrong and 14mm bolts are drilled or 3/8″ axle is butted (the central hole in bigger the 3/8″ in the center of the axle ?
I need to get a Rachet 9t for my 20/24″. And Hazzards 20/24, Plyte and Aitken 24″ and JCPC. I run fat Klytes Dirt/Aitken and will stick to them. Odsy is so perfect!
erenes ( November 19th, 2009 at 11:51 am ):
Is the original axle for 14mm bolts made from steel simply? I’m sure my recent post was a big MIX up
erenes ( November 19th, 2009 at 12:05 pm ):
what is the weight of 14mm bolts and 3/8″ ones? Are the 14mm hollow in any way?
g-coaster? life free coaster? i may switch back to having a free coaster and my second wheel, better start savin up :D

Yup, the original G-sport hubs were 3/8″. I remember a ‘review’ of it in BMX-Plus! when it came out YEARS ago. The one featured was anodized green and it was SWEEET.
But the fuck-heads at BMX-Plus! said it was similar to the Haro Megahubs which was SHITE. That turned me off since they explained nothing else about the hub. Nothing.
It was a very intelligent solution that worked around the flimsy ’standardized’ 3/8″ center axles of yesteryears which was utter shite.
Remember this was when you had to grind your flimsy 3/8″ dropouts to fit in the only 14mm in the market back then, the Gack hubs. These were shitty as well.
To this day I regretted buying the Gack hubs instead of the OG g-sport hubs.
Even though the bolts are 3/8″, the center axle is MASSIVE and provides internal support between the dropouts, since the loads will inevitably be transferred to the large contact surface collars and the massive stiff center axle once it’s done up tight.

3/8″ are SHIT. 14mm was a godsend for us OVER 200lb gorillas. Stupid. Just plain stupid. Since when have you ever pulled an axle and found it bent in the middle?
And you all are worrying about WEIGHT? Kidding…right?
James ( December 14th, 2009 at 12:09 am ):
I would break that so fast…
Go 14mm front to back! >:D

hey jim any news for the g-coaster?
Will these be ok with pegs?
Jim Bauer, Jim C, and myself have been running this setup with pegs since Ratchet testing started and have no problems.
